Prepare Your Vehicle for the Winter in MD

How to Winterize Your Car

A vehicle runs differently in the summer and the winter. Engine overheating is always a potential problem, but how and why a car might overheat is different during different weather conditions. Just as important is how the vehicle handles on icy roads or bridges, the comfort in the passenger cabin during daily drives. Potentially even more important is the safety consideration of breaking down in winter weather without appropriate shelter while waiting for a tow truck or emergency responders to arrive at the scene. It's a dangerous situation for a grown adult driving alone but becomes especially important of a topic considering having children or older adults as passengers.

Getting Your Car Ready for Winter

The first thing to do in preparation for winter weather is to make sure there is enough antifreeze in the radiator. During the summer, antifreeze is more efficient than water for cooling the engine, but mixing a bit of water in will work. In the winter, water will freeze and expand, bursting the pipes and causing expensive repairs.

The same concept applies to windshield washer fluid. Having the appropriate fluid available doesn't only protect the internal parts of the system but is also designed to help thaw ice forming on the windshield, which prevents the wipers from working and restricts vision. There are further issues with making sure the vehicle has good tires and is generally in good working order.

The Importance of Winter Car Care

Not having a car properly prepared for winter driving is a matter of safe driving at best or potentially dangerous in the worst of conditions. Not only can winter weather leave you stranded on the side of the road if the car breaks down which is never safe, but it can also be far worse for someone dressed with the expectation of only spending a few minutes outside while walking from a parking spot to a building who finds themselves having to spend hours outdoors. It might not usually take long, but there is no guarantee nor any way of knowing how long it might take for a police officer or a tow truck to get to the scene of a vehicle break down, even if weather conditions make the situation a potential emergency for someone due to exposure.
